Hello!

Hello! We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to learn about us and to introduce ourselves. We are Tiana and Michael, we love children and are hoping to make our dreams of raising a child together come true through adoption. Adoption is already a wonderful part of our lives because Michael was adopted by his father.

2.jpg

We know that if you are reading this, you have a serious decision to make and we want you to know how grateful we are to be considered as adoptive parents of your child. We know that if you are considering adoption, you have to be a brave and selfless person to consider making an adoption plan for your child and for the benefit of a loving couple who is not able to have children together on their own. We hope our story will help you in making your choice. Please know that no matter what you choose, we wish you and your child all the best. We hope our words and pictures give you a glimpse about our family. We look forward to meeting you and hearing about your hopes and dreams for your child.

About Us: How we met

We were introduced by a mutual friend, Tiana’s hair stylist who is also Michael’s client! One day, while Tiana was getting her hair done, her stylist, Kim, said “I know your next husband”. She said to Michael “I know your next wife.” Kim gave Michael Tiana’s phone number and he called. They spoke on the phone for two weeks before meeting for the first time. Tiana and Michael always joke that they had a long distance relationship and were each “geographically undesirable” because when they started dating, Tiana lived in New York and Michael lived in New Jersey. Michael proposed on Christmas day in California with Tiana’s parents, her brother Dorian, her sister-in-law Daniela and her nephew Elijah all there to share in the happy occasion. We knew from early in our relationship that we are both very family oriented and children were an important part of our lives and our future.

We had a beautiful wedding surrounded by our family and friends on the beach in Asbury Park, New Jersey. We then went on a honeymoon to Spain and Greece! Tiana convinced Michael to move from New Jersey to Brooklyn, where Tiana has made her home for over 20 years. It helped that Michael was born in Brooklyn and had lived there for several years after graduating from college. Together, we love to spend time together, go on road trips, gather with our friends and family and the children in our lives, explore new cities and countries and challenge ourselves with a new adventure each year. At the same time, we also appreciate little things like an evening hanging out on our stoop and watching the neighborhood walk by, nights at home, taking our dog for walks, going to the movies, game nights and trying to treat each other with love and respect. We are ready to give our unconditional love to a child and make a child the center of our world!

Our home and neighborhood

3.jpg
4.jpg

Our home is in a such family oriented, safe, and friendly neighborhood in Brooklyn with a park and several playgrounds nearby. Because we live in the city, there are many other parks, beaches and amusements within driving distance. Since living together in Brooklyn, we enjoy as many activities as possible. We like to go listen to music and try to attend concerts, shows and performances in the park and all around New York City with friends and their children. We have not found a museum that we do not like. And in fact, during our walks around Brooklyn, we frequently walked past the Brooklyn Children’s Museum and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. One of our favorite places to go is the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, which we visit several times a year with family and friends. We also have a very active social life where we are surrounded by family and friends, many of whom have small children. We look forward to play dates with our children, hanging at the playgrounds in our neighborhood and having dinners and BBQs and picnics with our close friends and family members. Over the years, we have become great babysitters to our friends’ children. We have playdates with them in the park, we have pizza dinners at their houses and sometimes we just run around after them at backyard bbqs!

A little more about us…

We always joke with each other that we are two halves of a whole. Tiana is kind, compassionate, loves organization and planning, is fiercely loyal to her friends and family and has a warm sense of humor. Michael, on the other hand, could best be described as spontaneous, full of life and character, who is always willing to laugh out loud and spread joy and happiness everywhere he goes. Between the two of us, our personalities, although different, means that Michael has great ideas of fun activities and wonderful outings to attend and Tiana makes sure that the car is packed up, the reservations are made and the snacks are in the cooler for the drive! We look forward to all of the trips and adventures with your child and all of the planning and diaper bags as well!

About Michael

I was born in Brooklyn, raised on Long Island and then back to Brooklyn after college. I eventually moved to New Jersey and then back to New York during my adulthood. I was raised by my mom, Carol and lived with my grandparents until Carol married my adopted dad, Bob. My mom divorced my dad when I was a baby and my mom met Bob while I was just one year old. They married a short time later and my dad adopted me. My mom and dad had 2 more children, my siblings Steven and Jill, whom we are very close to. We probably speak to them at least every day if not every week! My brother Steven has three children, all who have graduated from college and my sister Jill has two children, both of whom are currently in college. Growing up, me and my brother were friends with the entire neighborhood in Long Island, where we were raised. I was married once before and I am lucky enough to have 2 adult daughters, Cali and Lexi who both have wonderful relationships with Tiana and are both excited about the adoption. They have already declared themselves to be the best and “most likely to spoil” older sisters! Tiana says, one of the most endearing things about Michael is that he is such a great father. Michael is the most loving, supportive and encouraging. He supported both of his daughters’ college educations.

ABOUT TIANA

I grew up in the California suburbs with my parents, Thomas and Bernice, who have been married for almost 50 years! I have a younger brother, Dorian, who has one son, our nephew, Elijah. I grew up surrounded by family with my cousins along with aunts and uncles and my grandparents on my mother’s side all living in the same town. Family has always been very important to me and regardless of where I’ve been in life, I keep them as a top priority. When I was in college, I went home to see my family every 1-2 months. I graduated from college in southern California and then decided to explore the country a bit and open up my experiences by attending law school in Boston. My favorite places to be and travel in the world are pretty much anywhere that I am surrounded by my husband Michael, my friends and my family.

 MESSAGE FROM TIANA

I had a great childhood which is what we want to give to a child. Every year, my family would go on an annual camping trip, where we would invite our entire extended family plus all of our friends! One year, it got so big, that there were 6 adults and 17 children on the trip. We had to take over 2 camping spots so that we would all fit. My dad taught me how to figure out directions by where the constellations of the stars were and what side of the tree moss grew on. I learned how to fish and how to swim on these family vacations and more importantly, it was a time for all of us, outside of holidays, to all be together as a family. We hope to one day provide similar experiences for a child. Although my family still lives in California, we make it a point to fly home to visit my parents, my aunts and uncles and cousins and my grandma at least 2-3 times a year at Christmas and during the spring and summer. My brother, whom we are very close with, lives in Texas. We try to talk and text each other several times a week. We also try to go see him every year in Texas and he comes to New York City to see us and spend Thanksgiving with us and our friends. When we became adults, we traveled all over the world together.

Recently, we took a family vacation to Mexico that was so much fun! My parents were very active and involved in sports when I was a child, which carried on in myself and my brother. My brother is over 6’5” tall and played basketball most of his life (through college). I, on the other hand, was a major soccer fan and ended up being a captain on our varsity soccer team in high school. Even after graduation from high school, I continued to play intramural soccer both in college and law school and as an adult living in New York City. It is my favorite sport alongside football and tennis. Before I started to play soccer, I also played tennis and was on the swim team. I loved these activities growing up and met some of my best friends through the years from the sports teams I played on. And let’s not forget football! My side of our family are die hard San Francisco 49er fans and whenever my team plays Michael’s favorite team (the Greenbay Packers) in the playoffs, we agree to be in separate places while our teams compete against each other. Some of my favorite memories are going to the 49er football games with my dad and tailgating with his friends. We would throw the football around in the parking lot before the games while my dad cooked sausages and steaks on the grill.

Michael and I know that playing individual and group sports teach life long skills as well as being good for one’s health and happiness. We intend to encourage your child to engage in whatever sports he or she may be interested in. I love to write and started writing little poems and short stories while I attended classes. I was even a member of my school’s newspaper. I love writing and books. I always have bookshelves filled with books and Michael shares my love of reading. We hope to show your child that it will be completely okay to want to be a bookworm. It is such a fun way to discover new places and new information. My favorite books are science fiction and fantasy.

Which, of course, means that I am a huge fan of Marvel Comic movies! Who isn’t?! Although I try to hide my past history of attending Star Trek Conventions (the pre-Comic Con time period), it always comes out when I am begging everyone around me to go to Universal Studios and hang out in the Harry Potter world or waiting for the next Star Trek TV show to start!

A message from Michael

I, like Tiana, grew up playing sports. I played most sports as a kid, soccer, basketball, street hockey, ultimate frisbee, ran track, but I especially loved playing football and baseball and played through high school and then played with friends in college and still play every week today. I loved my childhood and want to give your child the same. My father owned an appliance repair company and my mother was an artist. As a kid, me and my brother went to camp where our mother taught arts and crafts in the summers, and we took frequent trips to the beach. We hope to give your child similar life experiences. Fun summer camps and lots of sunshine and friendship. We want to make sure that your child is loved by not only us, but our friends and family as well. I love the beach. If I could, I would be there every weekend! We look forward to continuing our active lifestyle and going to the beach with your child and spending days digging in the sand, making sand castles and playing in the surf!

19.jpg
20.jpg

Many of our friends have young kids and we love hanging out with them at the beach and taking them to the park! When I was twelve, my dad bought a small boat where we would fish, waterski, and get stuck on sandbars all summer with my family and friends. In fact, Tiana’s dad has a boat and every summer when we visit Tiana’s mom and dad, we go out on the boat and spend time with each other. Then and now, it was a magical time in my life. And we want those magical times to continue. I met many of my lifelong friends in college. I had a wonderful college experience, where I worked, studied, lived and volunteered in Albany New York. (Go Great Danes!). We hope to raise a child who will have so many opportunities to grow, spread their wings and make friends. We will encourage and support your child’s higher education

Our Adventures and Travel

When Tiana was younger, she did not have the opportunity to travel as much as she would have liked. When she was in college, her mom said to her “I regret that I did not travel as much as I would have liked. Go see the world” and Tiana did! Starting in college, she began to travel the world. She has gone to many different countries around the world and hope to see even more with Michael and your child! Because we love to travel, watch out! We cannot wait to expose a child to new cultures and new experiences and to see so much more of the world.

Family Traditions

As a family, we all go to group dinners and vacations and celebrate the holidays together. We celebrate any holiday we can think of! We will expose your child to many faiths and cultures as we are open to learning and experiencing as much as we can. For Christmas, we have a big Christmas tree in the house surrounded by presents. Every Christmas, we fly to Tiana’s family and we decorate the tree, put up the Christmas lights around the house and Tiana’s mom decorates the house with lots of holiday cheer. All of Tiana’s family travels to California from all over the world including our little nephew, her cousins, their children and even children and their families from the neighborhood! It is a time to catch up with everyone and spend as much time with family, including Tiana’s 99 year old grandma! Every year for thanksgiving, we spend it with a close knit group of friends and have a huge potluck dinner. And then we celebrate the day after Thanksgiving with family where we eat Chinese food and play games surrounded by kids of all ages.

We are big on Halloween as well. Dressing up and walking in the Brooklyn Halloween parade with our dog Luna along with our friends’ kids is so fun. We always dress up and give out candy to the neighborhood kids who are going trick or treating. We even dress Luna up! All that is missing is a child to join us on these celebrations.

Why We Decided To Adopt

Even before we were engaged and then married, we have always wanted to start a family together. Before we met each other, Tiana had undergone several egg freezing cycles for a time in the future when she would hopefully be able to fertilize the eggs and start a family. Unfortunately, after we were engaged we started the process of creating embryos that ultimately failed. We easily decided that our best path forward was adoption. We felt that there were people out there, such as yourself, who are strong and loving and would consider adoption as an option. Tiana and I have always wanted children together and it is important to both of us to be able to share ourselves and our lives raising a child. We hope to do so many of the things we grew up doing and the activities and cultures we have explored in childhood and beyond. We will always do our best by your child and cannot wait to share our lives with him or her.

Friends

Tiana has met some of her best friends in law school and then in her career. They are her east coast family. Michael has friends all over the country from college and his sales consulting. We spend as much time with our friends and their families as we can. They have all grown into being part of our family and we consider ourselves and our friends to be part of a strong family unit that are always there to support each other. Our friends run the gamut.

79.jpg

From those who do not have children, to those who are just starting their families and those who have adult children! We have so much support and encouragement, and we are so grateful. And our world has expanded to all of the people in our community who love us and support us. Not to brag, but your child will be surrounded by love, joy, and opportunity from us and all of people we spend time with and love. He or she will be loved and supported no matter what!
